What partial hospitalization is
Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a day program. You spend most of the day in treatment with us, then go home in the evening. It is the most intensive care we offer short of an inpatient stay.
PHP is rated ASAM Level 2.5, the level used by Virginia Medicaid and most insurers to describe it. In practical terms that means 20 or more hours of treatment a week, built around group therapy, individual counseling and medical support.
Psychiatric evaluation and medication management, including medication for opioid and alcohol use disorders when it fits, are provided through our partner, Foundation Medical Group.
Important: If you need medical detox, 24-hour supervision, or are not safe at home, we will help you find inpatient or residential care first.

How it works
Assessment
A clinician meets with you to understand your history, your use and your goals, and confirms PHP is the right level.
Your treatment plan
You and your counselor set goals together. Psychiatric care is added if you need it.
Daily program
Most of the day is spent in groups and individual sessions. You go home in the evening.
Step down
As things stabilize you move to fewer hours in our outpatient program, with the same team.
Referrals and getting started
You can call us yourself or be referred by a hospital, detox program, doctor, care coordinator or court. We confirm insurance and can usually schedule the assessment quickly.
After this program
When PHP ends, most clients continue in our Mental Health Outpatient or Intensive Outpatient program. Keeping the same clinicians through that change is one of the main reasons people stay in recovery.
Offered at: Chesterfield, North Chesterfield
Questions about partial hospitalization
What is the difference between PHP and IOP?
PHP is more hours: 20 or more a week, most of the day. Intensive Outpatient (IOP) is fewer hours spread across the week, so people can work or go to school. Many people start in PHP and move to IOP.
What does ASAM Level 2.5 mean?
ASAM is the national standard for describing addiction treatment. Level 2.5 is partial hospitalization: structured treatment for most of the day without staying overnight.
Can I get medication for opioid or alcohol use?
Yes, when it is clinically right for you. Prescribing is handled by Foundation Medical Group, which works with our clinical team on your plan.
Do I need to stop working?
Most people in PHP take time off or reduce hours, because the program runs most of the day. We can provide documentation for an employer or for FMLA paperwork.
Do you take Medicaid?
Yes. We accept Virginia Medicaid (Cardinal Care). Call us and we will check your plan and any commercial insurance before you start.
